Homeschooling - Wikipedia: "Parents of homeschooled teenagers usually don't want their children to adopt the behavior patterns of the zero-sum popularity culture that would surround them at a government school. Government school teachers are in much the same position as prison wardens, in that they want to have as little to do with the prisoners as possible, so they leave them to create whatever social organization they want. The society that the prisoners create is often warped, savage, and pervasive. The inhabitants of these worlds are trapped in little bubbles where nothing they do can have more than a local effect.
In contrast, the real world is very large, and the things inhabitants do there have real effects. When the things you do have real effects, it's no longer enough just to be pleasing. It starts to be important to get the right answers, and that's where homeschooled teenagers show to advantage."
