I think there is a false dichotomy of ways of piecing together complicated things: 1) by independent random events, and 2) by intelligent design. In reality, there are a whole spectrum of ways. It’s a matter, then, of working your way from all design to no design by small increments using recognizable examples. The examples must all be of an artificial kind. (Maybe we are talking about abiogenesis instead of evolution, in which case the complicated thing is some nucleic acid.)
